This Week in the Geekverse

I’ve rounded up a few topics from the Geekverse that I wanted to discuss : the challenges getting reviewed as a female SF&F writer, the OMG awesome new Thor trailer, and hair styles (both Loki’s and Lindsey Stirling’s).  Maybe I should have mentioned that this post is for all my geek gal pals, so no boys allowed in the treehouse!  ;)

So, without any further delay…

Challenges Being Reviewed as a Female SF&F Writer

The Mary Sue featured this article this week:  Are You a Female SF&F Writer? You Might Be Able to Get Published, But Good Luck Getting Reviewed. Speculative fiction magazine Strange Horizons has conducted a survey for the last couple years about book reviews, both those being reviewed and those doing the reviewing. Their results? “As in previous years, in the majority of the SF review venues surveyed, disproportionately few books by women were reviewed, and disproportionately few reviews by women were published.”

Well, that’s not really what I want to hear. I’m a genre-fiction-writing gal, and if I finish this damn novel, I would like equal chance for someone to review it, maybe telling potential readers about my story too. /shrugs I know that is a crazy idea. Something that jumps out at me (and mentioned by Rebecca Pahle too) is that more fantasy is written and reviewed by women, and more science fiction written and reviewed by men. Maybe the real issue is that these speculative fiction magazines lean much more heavily towards “hard” science fiction and do not have a level playing field for fantasy writers to participate. I don’t have the inside scoop, so I’d love to hear some speculation from others.

Thor: The Dark World Trailer

I’m super psyched, aren’t you? And Chris Hemsworth as Thor is still pretty damn awesome. xD No, I most definitely did not watch this trailer more than once. That’s crazy talk right there! ;)

Reactions to Loki’s New Hair

Apparently there have been many delightful reactions to Loki’s hairstyle on the Tumblrverse. It’s not as slicked back as it was before, which can maybe be attributed to the helmet with the horns, and he is looking much more emo. I didn’t think that guys with cascading raven waves were “in” right now, but I guess I was wrong. :P

How to Style Your Own Awesome Hair

I’ve been in love with her amazing style since I first watched Lindsey Stirling’s violin dubstep Crystallize(What, you haven’t seen it?  Well, click on the link.  If you read my posts about covers, click here.  Even better, click on this one!)  She makes that violin rock, and her hair and makeup are gorgeous.  Anyway, I’ve always wondered how her hair stays looking so good when she is dancing around and playing the violin.  She has shared her secrets, and I’m sharing them with all of you (that would be all girls with more than a pixie haircut and all guys challenging gender stereotypes… oh, come on, we know you’re reading this too :P )

Thanks for the girl talk. ;) I’m gonna go paint my toenails jade green now.
